In writing workshops, we spend most of our time on technique. It’s a big, well-lighted room in the house of writing-and-learning-to-write, as are the rooms named practice, and response, and reading as a writer. There’s a darker room, however, down in the basement—the room called nerve, the place where we gather the courage to confront our stories, face our projects and their consequences, commit words to the page. This talk explores the need for this room, ways of getting to it, and what we might find when we step inside.
