A Broken Thing: The Poetic Line

Weekend July 27 to July 28 2019

This workshop will focus on a variety of exercises designed to underscore the multiple functions of the line in poetry. What’s the primary function of the line in your work? And how can you utilize the line to its fullest? How can the line affect music, drama, and meaning or all of these in our poems? As a group, we’ll also discuss the pitfalls and frustrations each of us has with our own work in relation to the line and work together to dream up solutions to these problems. Hopefully, by the end of our time together you will have discovered at least one or two strategies for strengthening line work and line breaks in your poems. This will be a highly generative class: come prepared to do a lot of revising and writing!

In this workshop we will generate new writing through guided exercises and prompts; provide feedback on writing you bring from home.
